What are the benefits of high-intensity interval training?

The popularity of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and high-intensity workouts have soared in recent years. While to some it may seem like the last thing they want to try, these short workouts really do get the most out of your time – and with our busy schedules, that’s a big yes from us!

What is HIIT?

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a form of exercise featuring short bursts of intense physical activity with a quick rest period in between. HIIT sessions generally run from 10-30 minutes and can include strength and weight training, resistance training and cardio.

So, what are the benefits of HIIT workouts?

  1. Stimulate metabolism and promote heart health. HIIT workouts get your blood pumping by working harder instead of longer. This develops a healthier heart and circulatory system, while keeping your metabolic rate higher for hours after you’ve finished your session – much longer than a traditional workout. Your boosted metabolic rate stimulates production of your human growth hormone (HGH) and keeps calorie burn going strong!
  2. Build muscle and gain strength. The combination of strength and weight training alongside cardio gives you the best of all exercises, increasing muscle gain in the muscles that you use most. We guarantee after a few HIIT sessions you’ll be feeling stronger and finding quick progress.
  3. Time efficiency. Whether you’re squeezing in a quick 10-minute session or 30 minutes, the beauty of HIIT workouts is their convenience and ability to easily fit in with your schedule. Login to your Fernwood Pulse member account for at-home HIIT workouts when you can’t make it to your local Fernwood club.
  4. Body shaping and toning. If you’re looking to reduce body fat, high-intensity interval training is a great way to see results, fast. Due to the intense exertion required for HIIT, your workout continues to work for you even after you’ve finished.
  5. Improve mental health. While any and all exercise is beneficial for mental health, HIIT training can be especially beneficial. As HIIT requires less time dedicated to a workout, it can be less intimidating for those with low motivation or who may find exercise too time consuming.
