What is an infrared sauna and its benefits?

Infrared sauna hype
So, you’ve heard the word about infrared saunas but aren’t sure where to begin or if they’re for you. Let us start by saying that they’re absolutely worth the hype! There’s a reason these innovative saunas are taking the fitness and wellness world by storm.

If you’re looking for the best infrared sauna experience, then you’ve come to the right place…

What is an infrared sauna?
Unlike a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna is equipped with infrared lights and heaters that are designed to get you sweating in a different way. People often report feeling a gentler heat than a traditional sauna and finding it easier to breathe due to the lack of steam.

  • Benefits of infrared saunas
  • Improve sleep
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Detoxification
  • Promote recovery and pain relief
  • Aid weight loss

Spending time in heated environments such as saunas or hot yoga classes has also been reported to boost mood and mental health too, which is always a plus in our book.

Reasons why we recommend infrared saunas

  1. A 20–30-minute session post-workout can significantly aid recovery as it keeps the circulation moving in your body without physically using the muscles.
  2. Infrared saunas promote positive sleep habits as part of a healthy routine – as we know good quality sleep dictates how our entire body functions including better memory, improved motor function, muscle repair and more.
  3. 30–40 minutes in the sauna before bed will help with a good night’s rest.
  4. A body burdened with toxins can leave you feeling sluggish and unwell. Not a great start to your day or week of training at the gym, or getting through your day for that matter! 30–45 minutes in the sauna is an extremely efficient and effective way to detox your body, leaving you feeling healthy, refreshed and ready to smash those goals!

How often should I use an infrared sauna?
Depending on your schedule and workout routine, Fernwood recommends a sauna session 3-4 times per week. Keep in mind that using an infrared sauna does take some getting used to, so if or when you feel like you’re tolerating this amount you can safely use the sauna daily – everyone is different.

What do I do after an infrared sauna session?
Go about your day and stay hydrated! You want to replace the water you lost during the session, and you’ll likely keep sweating for a period of about 30 minutes or so after your session, which is why it’s especially important to keep up your water intake afterwards.
