The School Holiday Juggle: Keeping Your Kids Entertained and Yourself Fit

It’s the school holidays, you’ll be spending more quality time with the kids, but possibly less time doing anything else! Things you used to consider essential, like your regular workouts, suddenly get bumped down the list of priorities. Rewarding as it may be, this time of year demands a lot of your time and energy—arguably a time when health and fitness are more important than ever. With that in mind, we’ve put together some helpful hints to help keep your fitness routine (somewhat) intact these school holidays.

Flexibility is your friend

Your regular workout may not look the same, and that’s completely ok! Feel free to switch things up as you see fit. If you prefer a daily ‘split routine’, focusing on individual muscle groups, you might find it beneficial to do less frequent, full-body sessions. On the other hand, if full-body workouts are your thing, try the split routine, which will typically wrap up in less than half an hour. Also, consider changing the time of day you hit the gym—our 24 hour availability means we can adapt to your ever-changing situation at home. By remaining flexible and making some careful adjustments, you can hopefully provide some balance between your kids and your fitness goals.

Let Fernwood do the heavy lifting

If your kids simply can’t be left alone, you can always try our childcare service. We’ll provide your kids with a fun and safe place to play while you take a well-deserved opportunity to focus on your fitness. This service is only available at select Fernwood gyms, so make sure you check with yours.

Connect with our community

Lastly, remember that you’re not alone. Many women at Fernwood will be navigating the exact same challenge these school holidays. It always helps to stay in touch, share thoughts, and perhaps even create your own support network of like-minded mums. You may find that a fellow parent/gym-goer is the person most willing to assist in this wonderful and tricky time of year.

In the end, just because your kids are on holiday, it doesn’t mean that your fitness has to. By remaining flexible and taking advantage of our parent-friendly services and supportive community, your regular routine can keep on moving.
