Finding joy in exercise

We’ve all been there – standing at the edge of the treadmill, trying to muster the willpower to take that first step. Or maybe we’re trapped in a cycle of starting, stopping, and starting again. The truth is, exercise can sometimes feel like a chore, especially when life gets busy.

Regular exercise offers many benefits beyond physical fitness. It enhances mental wellbeing, boosts confidence, and provides a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it can improve sleep, reduce stress, and increase energy levels, allowing you to tackle life’s challenges with renewed vigor.

Finding joy in exercise

1. Embrace your ‘Why’
Before delving into the ‘how-tos’, ask yourself, “Why do I want to exercise?” Your reason might be as profound as combating a health concern or as simple as wanting to fit into your favorite dress again. Whatever it is, embrace it. Your ‘why’ is valid, and it will anchor you on days when motivation wanes.

2. Listen to your body
Tuning into what your body wants is the first step. Some days, it might crave the exhilarating rush of a HIIT class, while on others, a calming yoga session is in order. By aligning your workouts with how you feel, you’re more likely to enjoy the process.

3. Discover what you love
Not every exercise will be your cup of tea, and that’s okay. If Zumba doesn’t excite you, maybe strength training or Pilates will. Don’t be afraid to try new classes or regimes until you find what makes your heart sing!

4. Set goals beyond the scale
The scale is just a number, and let’s be honest, it doesn’t always reflect our effort or how fabulous we feel. Instead, focus on non-scale victories: mastering a new exercise, increasing your stamina, or simply feeling energised.

5. Celebrate small wins
Every time you choose to exercise, even if it’s just for 10 minutes, you’re taking a step toward a healthier you. Celebrate those moments, no matter how insignificant they might seem.

6. Make it social
Exercise can be a wonderful way to connect with fellow women. Join group classes, find a workout buddy, or engage in Fernwood’s community events. The camaraderie can be a significant boost!

7. Be gentle with yourself
Some days, the energy and enthusiasm just won’t be there. And guess what? That’s okay! Don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember, every woman’s journey is unique. Celebrate your efforts and understand that it’s okay to have days off.

8. Turn up the tunes
Music has the magical ability to transform our mood. Create an empowering playlist that gets your feet moving. Singing along is entirely optional, but highly recommended!

9. Reflect and realign
Every once in a while, pause and reflect on your journey. Are you enjoying your current routine? If not, what can you change? Keeping your exercise regime fresh and aligned with your needs will ensure you continue finding joy in it.
