12 Week Challenge winners one year on: Kate Russell
Kate was a state runner-up in the 2014 challenge.
During the 12 Week Challenge I ran my first fun-run. Since then I have completed another five fun-runs and I’m working my way up to this year’s goal: my first half marathon. Running is a huge part of my life now. I run socially with friends, or by myself with my music. I have also continued with my weekly personal training sessions with Maddy, who supported me through the challenge and continues to inspire and motivate me to push myself.
I think I gained two really important things from the challenge, the first being self-confidence. I have a lot more self-belief than I did before, I suppose because I have seen that I am capable of achieving my goals. The second is that I made some great friendships. I’m never without a friend in any class at the gym now and I catch up weekly with one of the girls from my group training sessions – we chat about how we’re going with our goals, fitness and everything else in between.
I signed up to the challenge with a lot of apprehension, but I told myself that I was investing in my health and to just throw myself into it. My tip is to embrace the challenge, give everything a go. Do all the classes that your Fernwood offers, chat to the other people doing the challenge, motivate and support one another.”
