12 Week Challenge winners one year on: Abby Maxwell-Bowen

Abby was a Lean Machine winner in the 2014 challenge.

“For me, the challenge was a process of refining what I was already doing. I was already seeing a food coach and beginning to make better, more educated food choices, and I’d always been a regular gym attender. The challenge wasn’t so much me suddenly going to the gym more but re-arranging and re-structuring what I did there.

One of the biggest reasons I joined the challenge was to give myself something to focus on during the tough time I was having – I was doing an IVF cycle which I knew would be hard going. I was lucky enough to have a personal trainer, Rachel Buchanan, who saw my potential not my age (I’m 45) and worked with me – I think I came out stronger mentally, not just physically. I went on to do another IVF cycle after Foxy and am now pregnant and due in June. Being the fittest and healthiest you can be is only going to benefit you...

I still do as much as I can. Obviously life throws curve balls your way and some weeks you don’t get to every class or tick off even half of your ‘to do’ list, but I still look forward rather than stop or dwell on the fails. It’s not whether the crap fairy visits you – and she visits us all – but what you do about it afterwards that counts. And if you never know failure, you’ll never appreciate success.

Take support from and give it back to those around you, both in the gym and online, as well as at home. In my down moments I remember looking at the comments of other ladies who were finding it tough going. There was an amazing lady who was legally blind but still doing her personal training and weekly workout challenges, and I thought, if she can keep going, so can I.

You have nothing to lose but kilos and bad habits and nothing to gain but confidence and fitness.”
