How did you feel when you realised you were a runner-up?

I was really blown away. It was a bit overwhelming finding out about the trip to Melbourne and the prizes – having hair, make-up and photos done – but [it was] really exciting at the same time.

What was your health and fitness like before you started the challenge?

My health wasn’t too bad, but I always had a sore back or knee, I often felt lethargic and [had a] headache. I was reasonably strong, but not fit – I couldn’t run more than half a kilometre without gasping for air.

When and why did you decide to take part in the challenge?

My daughter was about to turn three, and I had used having another baby as my excuse for putting on weight for long enough.

I wanted to be a better role model for my three kids, and I wanted them to see me focusing on my health and fitness, rather than just losing weight.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey?

I feel fitter and stronger, and I feel like I’ve made changes that I can stick to long-term.

Where did you turn for support?

I was really lucky and had fantastic support from my husband at home, as well as all of the gym staff. [Having the support from] my food coach, the class instructors, group leaders, crèche staff, and especially my PT, Aly, made it so much easier.

What do you believe was the key to your success?

[The key to my success has been] preparation and planning. [I would] plan meals for the week ahead and plan my gym times. Another big part was letting my husband and kids know how much I wanted to do this, and asking them to help me.

What did you learn about yourself throughout the 12 weeks?

I learnt that I’ve got more willpower than I thought, and that taking time for myself is not a selfish thing to do. I also learnt that if I really want to do something and I’m determined and work hard, I can do it.

What are your plans for staying on track in the future?

I plan to keep up my gym classes and PT sessions. I’ve signed up for Functional Fit [and] I’ll also be sticking to a healthy, balanced eating plan.
