Kristy lost 8kg with Fernwood's 12 Week Challenge
Kristy Dennis is a training, development and implementation manager at Fernwood HQ. She completed the 12 Week Challenge in 2015 and achieved superb results. We caught up with her for a Q&A...
What was your health and fitness like before starting the 12 Week Challenge?
My health and fitness was at an all-time low. I have hormonal problems so I was tired and my self-esteem suffered terribly. I was in a rut and I needed to change. Before I started the challenge, I could barely run for two minutes. I set a goal of being able to run at least three kilometres, and I can now run five.
When and why did you decide to take on the 12 Week Challenge?
I was in a work meeting and I put my hand up to “test” the challenge. As soon as I did, the doubts crept in and I wanted to slap my own hand down, but I slept on it for 24 hours. I spoke to my partner, friends and family who were really supportive. I knew it would be a busy time of year as it was leading into Christmas and New Year’s, and I had work travel and a two-week holiday booked … but it was now or never.
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey?
The best part is how good I feel; I’ve been catching up with friends, buying new clothes and I actually enjoy exercising and preparing my food with care now. I’ve also started wearing clothes that I hadn’t worn for a really long time. My home is a lot tidier as I cleaned out all of the cupboards in order to beat the demons of snacking.
Where did you turn for support?
I turned to my work friends - as I spend so much time with them – and they can be great support when you’re having a rough day. If I was having a bad day, I’d ring my friends or my mum. I read inspiring blogs about health, weight loss and before and after transformations to keep me inspired. When I felt a little grumpy, I would ride it out and start fresh the following day.
What do you think has been your key to success?
Consistency has been the key to my success. It’s helpful to accept that you’re not perfect, and your healthy eating and exercise can go south, but make sure you stay on track and in routine. Another thing I found helpful was to get my gym clothes ready the day before – this freed up time in the mornings.
What advice would you give to other women looking to take on the 12 Week Challenge?
Whether you’re in a rut, not sure where to start, in need of energy, want to start feeling good and wearing nice clothes again, I’d advise you to just do it. Fernwood is a great and supportive environment to achieve your goals.
