Joanna becomes the type of mum she always wanted to be
Joanna Kilner was the kind of mum who hid on the beach while her husband played with their girls in the water. At 105kg, she was depressed, ashamed of her weight, and found it difficult to chat to other adults for fear they were judging her.
That all changed when she joined Fernwood Carindale and shed 30kg from her frame. The new Joanna is happy, confident, full of energy, and no longer ashamed of herself. She loves running around and playing with her girls and chatting to the other mums.
What was your ‘light bulb’ moment?
“One day my 6 year old daughter told me how pretty I looked and asked to take my photo. When I saw the photo, I cried. The person I saw in the photo was not who I wanted to be. Within 2 days I was a member of Fernwood Carindale.”
Why did you choose Fernwood over other gyms or programs?
"I had seen ads on TV for Fernwood in the week leading up to my ‘photo moment’, and the minute I stepped foot in the gym I felt at home. I knew it would be somewhere where I could change my life. The staff were extremely friendly and accepting, plus they offered personal training, food coaching, child minding, excellent equipment – and the classes looked great too.”
What was or has been the most challenging thing?
“The most challenging thing was working out a time that suited my life to work out. I am a very busy mum with three daughters under sever years. But the gym was very accommodating and once I had my routine worked out, it just flowed.”
What aspects of your club do you enjoy most and why?
“I really enjoy group classes. I find it so motivating to have people around me encouraging me and pushing me further on my journey. Everyone at the gym is at a different stage of fitness and there is no judgement. “
What has been the biggest thing you have learnt thus far?
“To never give up. Each day is a new day and whatever mistakes or wrong decisions we made yesterday do not influence our decisions today.”
What do you think was your key to success?
“I think the key to my success has been having a solid start. I threw myself headfirst into this and I was really committed – not to losing weight, but to having a healthy lifestyle. I had great education at the start by doing both food coaching and personal training.”
How has losing weight, getting fit and being healthy changed your life?
“I am now the mum I want to be and I can take a more active part in their lives. I am setting a really good example for my girls and showing them how to be healthy and active. I can run around with them at the park and go swimming with them without feeling tired all the time. I am not ashamed to chat to other mums anymore, so my girls have more play dates with the other kids from school.”
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Fernwood?
“Go for it! Don’t ever feel ashamed or self conscious. Most of the women in the gym know exactly what it is like to be in your shoes and we have all walked the same journey as you. Do as much as you can and then give 5% more.”
