How Fernwood helped Jessica strengthen her mind and body
For Jessica King, joining Fernwood St Agnes has helped manage her anxiety and boost her confidence, as well as improve her physical health and fitness.
My mental health journey
"Prior to joining the gym I was self-conscious, riddled with anxiety and had no self-confidence. Then I joined St Agnes and everything changed. I became stronger, not only physically but also mentally.
"I had a period where I stopped going to the gym and my anxiety became bad again. I knew walking through those gym doors I would walk out feeling better. It took a lot but I returned, and six months on I have confidence and I'm no longer questioning whether to go work out.
Fernwood has been amazing, exercise really is the most underutilised form of anti-depressants."
My Fernie community
"Going in and seeing the friendly, welcoming faces was so beneficial to my mental wellbeing. I wasn't judged and they understood where I was coming from.
"Being unfit and overweight can be a mental struggle, but I fell in love the second I walked in the doors! I love the classes and the instructors, and have built lifelong friendships from the gym."
"I was always slim but had gained weight. I always walked past Fernwood as it's in my local shops, but my anxiety got the better of me and I wouldn’t join. Until one day I just did it, and I'm so glad I did!
"I know I can walk into Fernwood no matter how bad my day has been and I'll walk out feeling better every time! I've lost 30 kilos, learnt to eat to nourish my body and feel so much stronger and fitter!
"The friendly, supportive faces are definitely the best thing about Fernwood."
My advice to anyone thinking of joining Fernwood
"1000 percent do it! As scary as it is, no one is going to judge you. We are all there for similar reasons and everyone is supportive. For a woman, it's the best club to join! You will walk in and become addicted and happier, I promise!"
