Anna lost 5kg with Fernwood's summer program
People close to me described my participation in Fernwood’s summer body program that kicks off in October – as a reaction to my “quarter-life crisis”. I felt the need to challenge myself – I wanted an adventure. Despite exercising up to four times a week, I could never shed those last five kilos. I would start off with good intentions, but would soon fall off the wagon ... my energy levels were lacking, I’d feel tired after lunchtime, and would crave afternoon naps. It was always one step forward, two steps back.
I’d attended a few gyms in the past which offered a women’s only area, but they had the tiniest, darkest, most uninviting corner of the gym. It was only when my husband and I moved to Bendigo that I saw an ad for Fernwood, and I wanted to be part of something that was exclusively for women.
When I started the challenge, the support I received from my husband, personal trainer and other members of the program kept me going – I had a real desire to be better, do better and not throw the towel in.
Learning how to fuel my body in the right way – saying goodbye to microwave meals and takeaway, and learning about portion control and proper nutrition gave instant results.
Upon reflection, I was very self-critical, battled with low self-esteem and always doubted myself. Succeeding in this program has changed all of that. Everyone fails, but it’s how you get up and dust yourself off that determines what you can achieve. I now trust my abilities, and I know that I can do anything I put my mind to – the world really is my oyster.
I’m looking forward to the next 12 months. I want to continue challenging myself, see how much stronger and leaner I can be, run my first 10 kilometres – and maybe get my abs to make an appearance before next summer!
