5 tips to stay fit over the holidays

Oh, December… The most wonderful time of the year. And also the most confusing! If you feel like you’re already starting to lose track of time and space, then you’re not alone. The holiday season is one packed with parties, events and celebratory dinners, and the blur of public holidays and special days between now and the new year can feel like a lot.

But, what happens to our health and fitness routines when we’re so busy?

It’s easy to say, “I’ll just start again in January,” and who are we to judge? We’ve all been there – let’s be honest.

To help you keep on track during the silly season, we’ve put together our five best tips to stay fit and healthy over the holidays.

How to stay fit over Christmas and the festive season

  1. Eat well. Now this one is very important – nutrition goes hand in hand with fitness. If you’re heading to a party or dinner, have a snack before you leave so you don’t overindulge. This also means not skipping meals before you go out so you can later binge on a big feast – keep your blood sugar levels even with proper meals and snacks throughout the day.
  2. Drink in moderation. We all love a festive drink at this time of year, but choose your drinks wisely! Regularly switch between alcohol and water to stay hydrated, and try to avoid having too many sugary cocktails.
  3. Keep active. We’ve all skipped a workout or two during the holidays, and that’s okay. If you can’t make it to your regular PT sessions or can’t get to the gym as often due to your schedule, pencil in a walk during your day, or up your step count with these tips from our blog.
  4. Set realistic goals. You and only you know how much you can handle over the holidays, so check your calendar and plan your workouts accordingly. Setting yourself a huge goal can lead to disappointment if you don’t end up achieving it, so keep yourself motivated with small fitness goals.
  5. Find a workout buddy. Whether that’s your neighbour, your sibling, or the long-lost aunty you haven’t seen since last Christmas, keep each other accountable and commit to a routine that works for you both. The benefits of working out with a partner are endless!

While it’s important to try and stay on top of our health and fitness during the silly season, it’s also important to note that it’s okay to enjoy yourself. Don’t send yourself on a guilt trip for every mouthful you eat or drink – simply enjoy the time of year, the friendships and quality time with your family.

Regardless of your routine, keep these top tips in mind and make this holiday season your healthiest yet.
