In 2014, I had a major wake up call. After visiting my doctor, I was told that unless I shifted the extra kilograms I was carrying, I was at risk of developing type 2 diabetes – this was motivation enough to get me up and moving again!

The weight crept on after I had children

Before I had children I was fit, healthy, and went to the gym regularly. When I became a mother my priorities changed and I wanted to be the best mother I could be. I focused on my two children and forgot about myself. I stopped exercising, and at the age of 38, I weighed 88 kilograms, was unhappy with how I looked, had a low libido, low self-esteem, low energy and felt sluggish. It was time to make a change.

My children inspired me to become fit again

On my first Mother’s Day after joining Fernwood, my then three-year-old son bought me a green yoga mat and said, “Mummy can do lattes [Pilates], yoghurt [yoga], and think of me when she uses her mat.” This gesture still brings a tear to my eye, and helped me when an exercise or a class got too hard, or I felt too fatigued.

The women at Fernwood became my friends

I have met so many other lovely ladies of all different age groups, who were kind enough to share their journeys and struggles with me. I soon learned that I was in the presence of some truly awe-inspiring women who were able to beat the odds. My wonderfully supportive friend, Venita, motivates me and makes me laugh on a daily basis.

My family is thankful for having their energetic, positive, fit and fun-loving mum back. This journey has given me happiness and positivity, energy and self-esteem. I was, and still am, absolutely determined to beat the threat of type 2 diabetes – I want to be around for my beautiful family in the future.

How I did it

  1. Cutting down on sugar and alcohol (I still enjoy a red wine or three on occasion!)
  2. Converting to brown rice and pasta instead of white.
  3. Having a dessert only when I feel that I've earnt it.
  4. Continuing to cook the family favourites.
  5. Giving everything a good crack by participating in all of the group fitness classes.
  6. Gaining support from the amazing staff and instructors at Everton Park, who were willing to assist, support and answer questions.
