Looking for the perfect 45-minute class to get you trim, taut and terrific? Cycle classes burn huge number of calories and increase your fitness level fast, without the need to follow any tricky choreographed moves. Here are six reasons we’ll be hitting up a cycle class this week:
1. Get fitter, faster
Cycle classes follow an interval training style of exercise – meaning you get fitter, faster. Interval training combines short, high intensity bursts of speed, with slower recovery phases, repeated continuously during the one exercise session. Your fitness is based on the rate at which you recover, so continuing to ‘practice’ this rotation of exercise and recovery, trains your body to recover more efficiently, boosting your fitness level.
2. It's low impact
Indoor cycle classes provide an intense aerobic workout without harming your joints. Other high intensity exercises like running, skipping and boot camp style training can involve a lot of jumping up and down, placing stress on your knees, hips and ankles. If you’re recovering from an injury, a cycle class will enable you to work out at your maximum intensity without putting extra stress on your joints.
3. You choose how hard you work
Although they look tough, indoor cycle classes are suited to all levels of fitness, from beginners right through to cycle aficionados. Because you choose the resistance, you choose how hard you work. You can choose a medium or high intensity level, or ease into it if you’re coming back to exercise after injury or pregnancy. And if your Fernwood gym has bikes with an electrical display of your RPM (rotations per minute) and gears, your instructor will be able to give you a recommended range. Don’t worry if you can’t reach the range, with practice comes increased strength and speed.
4. It's motivating
If you’re the type of person who needs a little motivation, an indoor cycle class could provide the extra push you need without the need for splurging on a personal trainer. Cycle instructors encourage their class through an imaginary terrain of hill climbs and long flat roads for lightning-speed sprint sets. A purpose chosen soundtrack also helps to keep you on track and makes the time fly by.
5. Earn 10,890 steps
If you’re aiming for 10,000 steps a day, a 45-minute cycle class will give you the equivalent of 10,890 steps. This is well over the number of steps you'll earn for the same amount of time running on a treadmill (9300) and more than double the amount of steps you’ll earn in a 45-minute Body Pump class (5400).
6. Burn fat
