Let's face it, life can feel pretty stressful sometimes, particularly right now, but there are a few ways to stay on top of your stress levels. Little things like taking a break from screens can often have a positive impact. While it’s important to know the facts and keep up with latest health information, it can be beneficial to take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories. Hearing about the COVID-19 pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting and induce physical stress reactions in the body. 

Here are a few other ways to help manage daily stress:

Connect with others

We all know what is happening right now, and that we’re spending a lot more time inside. For some people, this can feel very lonely and isolating, particularly if you live alone. But just because things are different right now, doesn’t mean we can’t stay connected and have fun. We just need to be a little more creative! Read more here for ideas on how to stay connected.

Increase water intake

If you weren’t aware already, the recommended daily water intake according to Better Health Victoria, is eight glasses for women. All of our organs need water to function properly, so if you aren’t getting your daily amount, your body isn’t functioning properly – which can lead to stress. The best way to stay hydrated is by setting a goal or keeping a water bottle with you.

Take breaks when you need them

If you are constantly on the go or sitting in front of a computer for eight hours a day, you need to let your mind have some time out. Step out of the chaos and into a peaceful 10-minute break. Stop, have tea or a glass of water, re-energize your mind and then get back into it. This time away from your to do list will help to recharge.

Meditate

Meditation has many health benefits and is an effective way to relieve stress. The more you practice meditation, the easier it will be to develop a habit and in turn, more effective as a stress reduction method. If you have tried meditation before, you will be aware that sometimes your mind will occasionally drift off to that pile of washing you need to fold or that email you forgot to send however, try to train your mind to focus on your breath in order to stay in the zone. Eat a balanced diet  

While getting away from your desk or the kids to make lunch for yourself can feel impossible sometimes, it’s so important to maintain a balanced diet. Diet can play a big part in how you feel, which is why skipping meals is less than ideal. It can be tough, but try your best to make time for mindful eating. Having snacks prepared and creating a meal plan for the week are good ways to stay on track.
