What will I be qualified in at the end of my Cert IV in Fitness course?

Certificate IV in Fitness is the minimum requirement for those wishing to register as a Personal Trainer. You will qualify to be a Certificate 4 Personal Trainer and will be able to work in health clubs and gyms, conduct fitness assessments, design programs and build an exciting business providing personal training services to members, including Older Adults, Children and Adolescents. Older Adults Trainer and Children & Adolescent Trainer are now required by the national fitness registration bodies to work with these groups and are electives specifically chosen by Fernwood Learning to enhance your career opportunities as a Cert 4 Personal Trainer.

Is my qualification in Certificate 4 Personal Training recognised throughout Australia?

Fernwood Learning personal training courses are recognised throughout Australia. Upon completion of the Cert 4 in Fitness course students will be able to register with Kinect Australia or Fitness Australia which has international registration links as Personal Trainer, Older Adults Trainer or Child Trainer. Registration will enable you to work freely in the fitness industry and for Fernwood if you secure a role.

Are there any pre-requisites to enrolling for Certificate IV in Personal Training?

Is the Certificate IV in Personal Training for me?

You will need to be well organised with good reading and writing skills in English to at least year 10 level and access to a computer with internet, email and printer to complete the Cert 4 in Fitness correspondence course. You need an active interest in health and physical activity and a strong desire to work in this area.

The Certificate IV Personal Trainer course covers areas such as strength and cardiovascular fitness training in gymnasiums and it is expected that you are a current participant in these activities. After all, you will be later working in these areas to help people connect with exercise and change their lives! Many of our students have previously gained Certificate III in Fitness with Fernwood Learning and work as Member Motivators (Fitness Instructor) for Fernwood whilst completing their Certificate 4 Personal Trainer courses.

It is recommended you are working as a member motivator (fitness instructor) whilst completing this course to be “work ready” for employment.

What time is required to complete Certificate 4 in Fitness?

Certificate IV in Fitness requires about 10 to 15 hours of study and professional development per week to be completed in 4 to 6 months with an option to take up to 1 year to complete. A work placement of 40 personal training sessions spread over several weeks is required to complete the Certificate IV in Personal Training course and to develop your practical competence.

Can I do my work placement in a Fernwood Club?

Where possible, Fernwood will assist you to find a suitable work placement at a Fernwood Health Club. Enquiries for the 40 hour work placement at a Fernwood Gym as part of your course should be directed to Freddy Warren at Fernwood Learning. Requests for work placement at a gym other than Fernwood will incur an additional fee for a facility report by a qualified workplace trainer. This will not necessarily ensure the suitability of gyms other than Fernwood.

This covers the cost of course materials, text books which cover the Certificate IV in Fitness with Fernwood Learning, handouts and assessment, access to the interactive forum and email and phone assistance. Full payment at the time of enrolment is required.

Where are Certificate IV in Fitness courses conducted?

As it is a correspondence course, you will be studying at home and it is expected that you are actively participating in activities such as strength and cardio training in a gymnasium as you will be expected to be an expert in these areas when you are working. Your assessment of the practical areas of the Certificate 4 in Fitness course occurs during the compulsory workplacement at the end of the theory section of the course. You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate and instruct all the required activities of a personal trainer.

Do I need any other qualifications?

A current Certificate III in Fitness is required to enrol in the course.
