Certificate III in Fitness includes 25 units of competency to prepare you for employment in the fitness industry. Upon successful completion of your Certificate III in Fitness, you will be able to register as a Certificate 3 Fitness instructor. This qualification enables you to work in health clubs and gyms as a fitness instructor, conducting assessments, designing and delivering fitness programs and conducting circuit classes and helping people achieve their health and fitness goals.

Certificate III in Fitness subject areas

The Cert 3 in Fitness correspondence course is completed over approximately 6 months with an option to extend to 1 year. The course is divided into 3 different sections – each section has assignments, tests, workbooks and activities to be completed. In the third section of the course you will be participating in practical assessments during your 40 hour work placement that is spread over several weeks in a Fernwood Club and develops your practical competencies in the areas you have studied.

To complete assessment for the above units a 40 hour of supervised work experience must be satisfactorily completed. This will complete the practical sections of the above units. All Students are required to complete a Workplace First Aid course and provide a cited photocopy of HLTFA301B – First Aid - before they can graduate from the Certificate III in Fitness course.

What will I be qualified in at the end of my Certificate 3 in Fitness course?

Upon completion of your course you will be a qualified Certificate III Fitness Instructor, meaning you are able to work as a fitness instructor in any gym in Australia. In Fernwood gyms the role of Member Motivator requires a Certificate III in Fitness as a minimum qualification. You will also be qualified to provide fitness activities to Children and Teenagers who are increasingly attending Fernwood Gyms. Certificate III in Fitness (Fitness Instructor) must be completed prior to enrolment for Certificate IV Personal Trainer.

Is my Cert 3 in Fitness qualification recognised throughout Australia?

Fernwood Learning courses are recognised throughout Australia. Upon completion of the Certificate III in Fitness students will be able to register with Kinect Australia or Fitness Australia which has international registration links. A current First Aid Certificate HLTFA301B is required by students before they graduate and is also required for registration for work. Registration will enable you to work in the fitness industry generally and for Fernwood if you secure a role.

Is the Certificate 3 Fitness Instructor course for me?

You will need to be well organised with good reading and writing skills in English to at least year 10 level, have access to a computer, internet and email to complete the Certificate 3 in Fitness correspondence course. You need an active interest in health and physical activity and a strong desire to work in this industry. The Certificate III in Fitness course covers areas such as strength and cardio training in gymnasiums, and it is expected that you are a current participant in these areas. After all, you will be later working in these areas to help people connect with activity and change their lives!

What time is required?

You will need to commit to about 10 to 15 hours of study per week to complete the Certificate 3 in Fitness correspondence course. A work placement of 40 hours spread over several weeks is required to complete the course and will provide you with the practical experience and increase your employability.

You will have all the qualifications for employment as a Certificate 3 Fitness Instructor – member motivator in Fernwood Women’s Health Clubs. There is no guaranteed job at the end of the course however Fernwood clubs are always looking for motivated fitness professionals. Careers information and a workplacement are included in the course to assist your transition into employment within the industry.

Can I do my work placement in a Fernwood Club?

Where possible, Fernwood will assist you to find a suitable work placement at a Fernwood Women's Health Club. Enquiries for the 40 hour work placement at a Fernwood Gym as part of your course should be directed to Maryanne Long at Fernwood Learning. Requests for work placement at a gym other than Fernwood will incur an additional fee for a facility report by a qualified workplace trainer. This will not necessarily ensure the suitability of gyms other than Fernwood.

How much does a Certificate III in Fitness cost?

  • Upfront payment – $1350 full course fee

This covers the cost of course materials, text books, handouts and assessment, access to the forum and online sections of the course as well as email and phone assistance. Full payment at the time of enrolment is required.

Do I need any other qualifications?

Before you complete the Certificate 3 in Fitness course you will need a current Certificate in First Aid HLTFA301B. You can contact a local provider and complete the first aid during your correspondence course.
