Upon successful completion of your Certificate III in Fitness, you will be able to register as a Certificate III Fitness Instructor. This qualification enables you to work in health clubs and gyms as a fitness instructor, conducting assessments, designing and delivering fitness programs and conducting circuit classes and helping people achieve their health and fitness goals.

Certificate III in Fitness subject areas

Successful completion of the Certificate III in Fitness requires you to complete 15 units of competency. These units are grouped together into 8 different modules.

Each module requires you to complete written question and answers, projects, and a variety of practical activities whilst on work placement. Practical work placement assessments will consist of a minimum of 40 hours that is spread over the duration of your course in a Fernwood Club (or another Gym approved by Fernwood Learning).

To complete assessment for the above units a minimum of 40 hours of supervised work experience must be satisfactorily completed. This will complete the practical sections of the above units. All Students are required to complete a First Aid Certificate and provide a cited photocopy of HLTFA301C Apply First Aid - before they can graduate from the Certificate III in Fitness.

What will I be qualified in at the end of my Certificate 3 in Fitness course?

Upon completion of your course you will be a qualified Certificate III Fitness Instructor, meaning you are able to work as a Fitness Instructor in any gym in Australia. In Fernwood Clubs the role of Member Motivator requires a Certificate III in Fitness as a minimum qualification and in gyms other than Fernwood you’ll be fully qualified as an Exercise/Gym Instructor.

Is my Cert 3 in Fitness qualification recognised throughout Australia?

It certainly is! Fernwood Learning courses are recognised throughout Australia. Upon completion of the Certificate III in Fitness students will be able to register with Physical Activity Australia or Fitness Australia which has international registration links. A current First Aid Certificate HLTFA301C is required by students before they graduate and is also required for registration for work. Registration will enable you to work in the fitness industry generally and for Fernwood if you secure a role.

Is the Certificate 3 Fitness Instructor course for me?

You will need to be well organised with good reading and writing skills in English to at least Year 10 level, have access to a computer, internet and email to complete the Certificate 3 in Fitness correspondence course. You need an active interest in health and physical activity and a strong desire to work in this industry. The Certificate III in Fitness course covers areas such as strength and cardio training in gymnasiums, and it is expected that you are a current participant in these areas. After all, you will be later working in these areas to help people connect with activity and change their lives!

What time is required?

You will need to commit to approximately 10 to 15 hours of home study per week to complete the Certificate 3 in Fitness correspondence course. A work placement component of 40 hours spread over the duration of the course is required as part of the course. This works out to approximately 3 hours per week or 5-6 hours per fortnight. Work placement will provide you with the practical experience necessary to feel confident you're work ready immediately after the course and increase your employment opportunities. This can be done in a block at the end of the course, or in small periodic shifts throughout the duration of the course. Please note you will not be competent in any unit/module until the practical component for that module has been completed.

Can I do my work placement in a Fernwood Club?

Where possible, Fernwood will assist you to find a suitable work placement at a Fernwood Women's Health Club. Enquiries for work placement at a Fernwood Gym as part of your course should be directed to Fernwood Learning. Requests for work placement at a gym other than Fernwood may incur an additional fee for a facility report by a qualified workplace trainer. This will not necessarily ensure the suitability of gyms other than Fernwood.

Do I need any other qualifications?

No! However, the HLTFA301C First Aid course does need to be completed within the first month or two of commencing your studies to ensure that you are able to apply first aid in the work setting if required. First Aid is to be undertaken of your own accord with your local First Aid provider, at your own expense.
