Fernwood pans celebrities for crazy diet endorsements

A recent issue of The Celebrities and Science Review 2009, published by the charity Sense about Science, exposed the many unfounded claims of celebrities who support unproved therapies, particularly with regards to weight loss. Ms Williams, who started the women’s-only gym chain 20 years ago, says women have been misled and confused by many celebrities who hail the benefits of diets that have no scientific merit and can cause women more harm than good.

Diana says there are many celebrities who need to be taken to task for their continued advocacy of gimmicks with the latest craze which involves taking vinegar shots claiming to flush out fat and digest food more quickly. It has devotees including model Cindy Crawford and actress Megan Fox,
Megan Fox was recently quoted in the New York Post saying "I'm not one for dieting or exercising, because I'm lazy and I have a really big sweet tooth, so I have to do cleanses every once in a while 'cause of the amount of sugar I take in."

According to a Newspoll survey commissioned by Fernwood in 2009, one in two Australian women said they had tried various fad diets in a bid to shed weight fast. Women have been turning to weight loss gimmicks and fitness fads to lose weight for decades without sustained success.

“Over the years women have wasted a lot of time and money on crazy diets that exclude essential food groups. While these unhealthy approaches may help to drop weight fast, many women are disheartened and often regain all the weight and more once they finish,” Diana said.

Diana urges women to take a sensible approach to weight loss and not to be sucked in by fads promising the world. “The only way women can ensure that they receive steady and sustained weight loss is through a balanced diet and regular exercise. No miracle pill or drink will help you lose weight and keep it off – just hard work and a lot of support, which is why so many women have found success through Fernwood,” she said.
