Diabetes Prevention Plan

Once you have diabetes, you may not be able to cure it, but there’s plenty you can do to manage it. If you don’t have diabetes the following measures will help you stay that way.
Start slow
“Drastic changes to your diet or exercise plan are always hard to sustain,” says Professor Davis. "Start with simple things like swapping your morning muffin for a piece of wholemeal toast, cutting out sugary soft drinks, or going to the gym twice a week.”
See a dietitian
Diabetes is a life-changing illness and you need expert diet advice. A dietitian can help you work out a realistic diet plan with your lifestyle and tastes in mind.
Enjoy your food
Don’t let guilt dictate your eating habits. “Don’t be too self-critical,” advises Professor Davis. "Diabetics can still eat sweets and chocolate, but only in moderation."
Go to the gym
Sometimes it’s hard to put your own needs first, but your health is number one. Choose times during the week when you can make time to go to the gym and stick to the routine – let your family take care of themselves.
Try weight training
Most people know lifting weights makes you stronger and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, but studies show it can also lessen the symptoms of diabetes. This is because muscle tissue helps remove sugar from the blood.
