Breaking the Habits of Emotional Eating

Identifying the triggers and patterns of emotional eating is the first step to curbing eating habits and breaking the patterns. When emotional eating strikes, try to focus on one of the following exercises:

  1. Reach for a glass of water. This is the easiest and most readily available solution.
  2. Workout your worries at Fernwood Fitness health centers. Grab your towel and head for the club to try a new fitness class or cardio session.
  3. Delay. Give yourself five minutes, ten minutes, and entertain yourself in other ways while you try to pass the time.
  4. Find healthy rewards and nice things to do when the feelings strike. A warm bubble bath, walk around the park with music or phone a girlfriend.
  5. Write about it. Not only in a food diary, but in a feelings diary. Make notes on how you felt and how you worked through each issue.
  6. Don’t panic. No food is illegal as long as you’re getting the right foods in to nourish your body. Focus on the positives as much as you can.
  7. Learn relaxation techniques, try yoga at Fernwood Fitness or seek out meditation tips.
